B Golden Jewelry School: A History of Passion and Community

B Golden Jewelry School has a rich history that dates back to 2009, when Brittany Golden first opened her doors in a small house in Provo, Utah. At the time, she was the first and only dedicated jewelry studio in the state, and she quickly gained a reputation for her teaching skills and her passion for jewelry making.

In 2013, B Golden Jewelry School moved to its first Salt Lake City location. This larger space allowed Brittany to offer more classes and workshops, and it also helped to attract students and talented Visiting Instructors from all over the country. The school continued to grow in popularity, and in 2021, Brittany moved to a larger location in Salt Lake City.

The Austin studio was an additional opportunity that presented itself during the pandemic. She had always admired the previous studio's cool community and vibrant atmosphere and was excited to bring it into the B Golden family in 2021. The Austin studio has been a huge success and has helped to further cement B Golden Jewelry School's reputation as one of the leading jewelry schools in the country.

Today, B Golden Jewelry School is home to a wealth of knowledge and experience. Brittany and her amazing team of instructors are passionate about teaching jewelry making and committed to helping students of all levels reach their full potential. The school also offers a variety of resources and support services, including a retail store offering tools, supplies, and stones, an Online Jewelry School, and a Jewelry Business Accelerator Program.

Agnes’ jewelry celebrates and honors three cultures while maintaining a cohesive, clean, sophisticated style and design. She is officially certified as a goldsmith in Germany. She moved to Mexico from Germany so she could study silversmithing techniques and design. Currently, Agnes resides in Austin, Texas. She frequently spends time in Mexico City, where she collaborates with local artisans. Agnes has had an extraordinary career as a jeweler, silversmith, and product designer. Jewelry, fashion and lifestyle books, and periodicals have featured her jewelry. Her award-winning work is carried by high-end boutiques and art and craft galleries in the United States. The list of exhibitions and shows that have featured Agnes Seebass designs is numerous. Her jewelry is sought after by experienced collectors as well as beginning novices.

When Alex Boyd was a young boy he stole an enchanted ring from a powerful bruja.  That night his slumber was disturbed by a tapping at his window. When he slid the window open a huge raven rushed in, flew around the room and perched on his bookshelf. "I know what you have taken from me,"  the raven cawed.  "I don't know what you’re talking about," Alex lied, hiding his bejeweled finger behind his back.  "No matter.  It is your problem now.  The wearer of that ring is indentured to create more talismans of power, either for 1000 years or until he makes something so sublime, so perfect, so beautiful that the spell is broken and he is freed." "1000 years it is," Alex said as he thrust the raven out the window and slammed it shut behind her.  He has been making jewelry ever since. 

Anne is a CPA and has been an independent studio artist for over 20 years, teaching workshops and exhibiting in fine craft shows. Work is included in the permanent collections of: the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery, and Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, amongst others as well as numerous private collections. Service is a critical part of her journey and she serves as treasurer on several boards of directors: The Enamelist Society, Pocosin Arts, and Enamel Guild North East.

Ashley Gull wanted to be anything but artistic as a child. Growing up with parents who were gifted artists, she felt frustrated with not being able to draw or paint the way they did. While studying business in college, she took an elective class in wheel-thrown pottery, which led her to change colleges – and majors to pursue a Fine Arts degree in ceramics. After having children, she explored scrapbooking and photography, becoming a teacher and published scrapbook artist developing products and courses for scrapbooking conventions. Ashley is passionate about Halloween and spends much of the year planning and executing costumes for her family. Her first endeavor in metal was building a functional articulated suit of armor for a medieval reenactment.

For her daughter’s 16th birthday, they took a metalsmithing class. Wanting to learn more, they found a jewelry school not far from where they live. One 2 hour class at B Golden Jewelry School was all it took; Ashley dove in headfirst. She is a graduate of B Golden Jewelry School’s Jewelry Business Certification Program and sells her line through her business – Gull Design Studio. She believes anyone can take a class and make a piece to be proud of—no need to feel artistic!

Baleigh has tinkered with craft and jewelry since she was a wee adolescent growing up in the lush green mountains of Vermont. After pursuing a BFA in Creative Writing she realized she had made a terrible mistake on a very expensive education because what she wanted to do was work with her hands.  She then enrolled in the North Bennet Street School’s Jewelry Making & Repair program in Bahston, MA and everything was good again. Baleigh was technically trained to craft her own tools, fabricate intricate pieces from scratch, handset diamonds & precious gems and repair fine jewelry.

Baleigh is a process jeweler and gets turned on from the problem solving involved in designing intricate pieces and setting weird stones.  Her work employs clean lines, industrial elements & graceful geometry that she finds inspiring from everyday design. Baleigh works out of her home studio that she shares with her hubs Alex, along with their 3 adorable floofs.

Growing up, I was always the artsy kid. My grandmother played a huge role in nurturing my creative spirit by teaching me how to paint and draw. She's a big inspiration to me. Something I had always admired about her was her stunning jewelry collection and her eye for picking out beautiful pieces. This got me very interested in the world of jewelry. So, when I hit college, I thought, "Why not try a jewelry-making class for fun?" Turns out, it was more than fun – it was a passion waiting to be discovered. College introduced me to metalsmithing, and I was head over heels for it. I'm all about learning, always seeking new techniques, materials, and stretching the limits of my creativity. Excited to see where this ongoing journey takes me!

As a child with an overactive imagination and a habit of collecting rocks in her pockets, Brittany Golden could often be found digging to China or climbing the tallest tree. It was no surprise that Brittany became the family's resident artist. Today, she is not only a celebrated local artist, but also internationally recognized.

On a whim in 2002, Brittany signed up for a jewelry class at the local college while studying the art of creating teeth. It was here she became fascinated with the metal casting process. After pursuing her passion for working with metal further, she studied precious stone setting under Blaine Lewis and more non-traditional metal techniques with Robert Dancik. Her real-life calling was then born—jewelry making.

Starting in 2004, Brittany was the silversmith instructor at Sundance Resort for nine years while also running her own private teaching studio in Provo. In 2013, she brought her passion for silversmithing and teaching to Salt Lake City, UT. Since then, B Golden Jewelry School has offered a wide range of classes that explore various techniques and mediums in metalsmithing, including an intensive 20-week Jewelry Business Accelerator Program.

In August 2020, she was presented with the opportunity to purchase another jewelry school in Austin, TX. Since then, she has expanded her vision and passion to that space and grown both locations by adding new classes, instructors, and virtual classes.

In March 2021, the business moved into a larger building in Salt Lake City. The new location includes an extensive retail space selling tools, equipment, materials, stones, and silver supplies needed to make jewelry. Additionally, more dedicated studio spaces were created to accommodate the expansion.

Her past accolades include: Her jewelry appears in the book “30 Minute Rings” and was featured at the Sundance Gallery for ten years. She has also been the featured artist in several exhibits within Utah and galleries across the country. She was a member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths, a major sponsor at National events, and a speaker for their virtual educational series.  She was on the Craft Lake City Advisory Board for four years and helped in the growth and direction of the yearly DIY Makers Event.  She has been a judge for an International Jewelry Competition through AMCAW.  She served as the President of the Women’s Jewelry Association Salt Lake Chapter and won an award at the Leaders Conference for the fastest-growing Chapter.

Master goldsmith Charles Lewton-Brain trained, studied and worked in Germany, Canada and the United States to learn the skills he uses. His work is concerned with Process and Beauty as well as function. He thinks of decision making in metal as drawing, working with the same sensibilities of mark and commitment as when working with pen and ink. Many pieces use a 'printmaking' approach to working metal, that is that the work is done in separate steps in groups and layers building towards the finished piece. Process and the tensions between nature and structure are part of his concerns. His work and writing on the results of his technical research have been published internationally. In 1994 Brain Press was established which documents, publishes and markets the results of his research activities. He has worked on the Cage Series of work extensively since 2001. Images of some Cage work is here Slide Show. He traveled to Thailand to visit Dr. Hanuman Aspler, his colleague, in the spring of 2008. This journey contributed to a major exhibition and catalog (River Trip) and rekindled his interest in chasing. Over 700 images from the journey are here. He also published two major books in 2008, Foldforming with Brynmorgen Press, and The Jeweler's Bench Book with MJSA Press. He spent January 2015 in Chiang Mai, Thailand studying chasers. Since 2012 he has co-juried the Lewton-Brain Foldforming Competition, an international online exhibition organized by the Center for Metal Arts and Sue Lacy.

A distinguished Fellow of the Society of North American Goldsmiths, a member of the Royal Canadian Academy and a Fellow of the Gemological Association of Great Britain he has lectured and taught in England, Germany, the United States, Canada and Australia. He is a consultant on the jewelry field and has written expert witness reports regarding health and safety in US legal cases. A short video interview showing foldforming is here. Designer and metalsmith Cyd Rowley creates “vessel” pendants that are small,  three-dimensional sculptures.  Her inspiration is about creating pieces that hold meaning, that play a powerful role in making us feel connected to others, and tell the story of who we are. She studied architectural design and jewelry fabrication at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland, and currently works from her studio in Kensington, Maryland.
